The FSS team has a real passion for property and a combined experience covering residential sales and lettings, commercial property, auctions and surveying. With a strong reputation for quality, trust and value along with local property knowledge developed over many decades, the team is led by owners Simon Croft and Richard Smailes, with support from Consultants Charles Smailes and Ken Webb and Associate Partners Michael Lebbon and Dan Brumfitt.
Simon has over 30 years experience in the property business having commenced his career in Harrogate in 1984. He joined FSS as Partner in 1998. Simon has successfully let and sold some of the most exclusive properties in the Harrogate District and has built contacts with various Blue Chip and corporate clients. He has also conducted numerous auction sales on behalf of the company ranging from small investment properties to large portfolios. Former captain of Harrogate and Wakefield Rugby clubs, former Yorkshire second row, he now rows for Leeds Rowing Club, is a keen cyclist and spends time at the local gym. A supporter of Harrogate and Yorkshire Carnegie Rugby Clubs.
Richard has worked in estate agency and property consultancy in and around Harrogate for over 20 years and oversees our residential sales and auction departments. He is well known for delivering the best possible personal service to his clients and is renowned for his accurate market valuations and sound advice. A skilled auctioneer, he is a popular face at FSS’s quarterly property sales in Harrogate and regularly gives up his time to take on the role of charity auctioneer at fundraising balls and events. Richard is also a keen sportsman.
Charles commenced his Estate Agency life in 1963 and he is a founding Partner of Feather Smailes Scales. He has been an auctioneer for nearly 50 years, selling all types of property and land from fishing lakes and railway cuttings, to country estates and farms. He has been an active member of industry professional bodies including Chairman of the National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers (NAVA), President of the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) and the original Chairman of the National Federation of Property Professionals (NFoPP) Board - the body that controls the UK Agency industry. Charles for over 25 years was Chairman and is now a Director of Harrogate Housing Association which has grown to be one of the district's major providers of social housing. Son of former Yorkshire and England cricketer Frank Smailes, Charles enjoyed playing cricket and now gets great pleasure from watching his sons and grandsons carry on the tradition along with supporting Harrogate Rugby Club.
Michael is directly involved with the large Residential Lettings Department and has been with Feather Smailes Scales since 2003. The department has a team of 10 and has more than 1100 properties on the books. His aim is to provide clients with honest up front advice at rental valuation stage and guidance on any improvements required to achieve a quick let with minimal voids. When Michael is not at work, he enjoys his holidays and spending quality time with his young family.
Dan studied at Nottingham Trent University and has been a Chartered Surveyor since 2001. Dan has worked for a number of practices including King Sturge, Jones Lang LaSalle and Evans Property Group. Dan brings a wealth of commercial and residential experience to the team at FSS and enjoys a broad spectrum of work that being a general practice chartered surveyor covers, with anything from valuation reports to large scale agency transactions, or, landlord and tenant matters and business rate appeals. Away from the office Dan enjoys a wide variety of hobbies including golf, but his main passion is country pursuits.
Ken qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in 1977 working in two Estate Management roles before Joining Halifax Building Society in 1985 where he took charge of the Estates Department building the portfolio, originally across the North of England and Scotland but more latterly following the merger of Halifax Building Society with Bank of Scotland across the entire UK network including Ireland. Ken brings a wealth of experience and contacts to FSS and is a welcome member of the team. Outside work, Ken enjoys playing golf, tennis and watching Rugby Union.
