Rudding Halfway House Owners Tee Up for Retirement

A trailer that provides welcome refreshments for golfers at the ninth hole of Rudding Park’s award-winning course is up for sale as its owners tee up for retirement.

After building up a successful year-round business, Barbara and Les Welford have taken the difficult decision to hang up their aprons at The Halfway House bunker bar.

“We’ve loved running this place, getting to know the regular golfers and looking out on the fabulous views across the golf course,” said Barbara.

“But even though we work together and see plenty of each other we’d now like to  spend more quality time as a couple enjoying the Yorkshire countryside.”

The bunker bar is open seven days a week, all year round, and is set to become even busier as Rudding Park prepares to open its new £9.5m spa in May.

“It’s a thriving business and although we’ve chosen to close at 4pm each day, the golf course is busy into the evenings throughout the summer and the opportunity is there for someone new to extend the opening hours.

“We’ve reached a stage in life when we want to slow down and we feel the Halfway House will be perfect for someone who has the energy to develop and expand it as Rudding Park grows,” added Barbara.

The food van is permanently sited at the halfway point on Rudding’s 18 hole course and has a fully equipped kitchen including fridges, hot plate and grill and hot and cold running water. The van and business are being sold by Harrogate property firm FSS for £40,000.

Retirement will allow Barbara and Les to spend more time at their caravan in the North York Moors. In the meantime, they are hoping to find someone to carry on their hard work and keep Rudding’s golfers sustained as they make their way to the 18th hole.
