Feather Smailes Scales is owned and managed by the three partners Charles Smailes, Mike Hare and Simon Croft with three associates Michael Lebbon, Richard Smailes and Guy Lythe.
Charles started in Estate Agency in 1963 and was co-founder of Feather Smailes Scales in 1994 with his then partners Jim Feather and Peter Scales.
He is the Partner responsible for Auctions for the firm and has been an auctioneer for 42 years.
He developed an interest in promoting standards in the Profession early on his career and has been an active member of industry professional bodies including Chairman of the National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers (NAVA) and President of the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA). He is a Past Chairman, now Director, of The Board of National Federation of Property Professionals (NFOPP) which is the parent company overseeing and controlling the workings of the four Professional bodies NAEA, NAVA and ICBA and ARLA ( The Association of Residential Letting Agents.)
Charles is a Past Chairman for 25 years and now a Director of Harrogate Families Housing Association which has grown to be one of the district's major providers of social housing.
Son of former Yorkshire and England cricketer Frank Smailes, Charles enjoyed playing cricket and now gets great pleasure from watching his sons and grandsons carry on the tradition.
Having approaching 40 years in the property profession, Michael has worked in Harrogate since 1983, merging his former practice with Feather Smailes Scales in 1999 to become partner in charge of the surveys, valuation, and commercial departments.
He now specialises in commercial sales and lettings, and residential and commercial valuations. As well as being a Chartered Surveyor he also holds a masters degree (LLM) in advanced commercial property law and is considered to be an expert on many commercial property matters, but especially lease renewals and rent reviews.
He is currently an examiner and lecturer for NAEA/ICBA and the immediate-past national Chairman of the ICBA.
A die hard Leeds United fan for over 45 years, he and his wife enjoy travelling and they are both keen walkers. At the tender age of 50 he completed the coast to coast walk (195 miles) in just 10 days.
Simon is Partner responsible for Residential Lettings and Sales, he also assists Charles Smailes in the Auction Division.
Simon has over 25 years experience in the property business having commenced his career in Harrogate with Mawers Estate agents in 1984, before managing the Harrogate office of General Accident Property Services and then joining Feather Smailes Scales as Partner in 1998.
Former captain of Harrogate and Wakefield Rugby clubs, past Yorkshire second row and now a member of Leeds Rowing Club either as part of a Coxed 4 or Pair.
Michael is responsible for the extremely busy Residential Lettings Department and has been with Feather Smailes Scales since 2003.
The department has a team of six and has more than 800 properties on the books. His aim is to provide clients with honest up front advice at rental valuation stage and guidance on any improvements required to achieve a quick let.
When Michael is not at work, he enjoys his holidays and spending quality time with his young family.
Richard is responsible for the Residential Sales Department which opened in early 2010. He has worked in estate agency in and around Harrogate for the last 18 years and joined the firm to manage the department.
He is dedicated to delivering the best possible personal service and has had a great early start achieving 97% of the asking prices for the properties he has sold. This shows the benefit of experienced valuation and negotiation skills and dedication to achieving the best for his clients.
On the rare occasions when Richard isn't working he can be found on the Rugby or Cricket pitch coaching his son's team and still attempting play.
Guy studied at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester and has been a Chartered Surveyor since 1996. Guy has been with the residential survey and valuation team at Feather Smailes Scales for over 5 years carrying out building surveys, homebuyer reports valuations etc.
He enjoys the variety that the work brings covering anything from dilapidated, Victorian terraces to multi million pound houses in beautiful surroundings.
Guy's passion has always been cycling and he has even cycled from Lands End to John O'Groats and he participates in the annual cycle ride from Wetherby to Filey as part of the Great Yorkshire Bike Ride.
